It is insoluble in cold water and carbon disulfide and decomposes in hot water, but hardly soluble in ethanol, but soluble in hydrochloric acid. Used as a catalyst for the oxidative cyclization of 1,7-diene to oxepanediol. The tertiary carbon-hydrogen bond of the cyclic ether is hydroxylated with periodate or bromate.
